Generally day to day while watching a HD monitor you wont see a big difference as the angle of view is set by the lens and not the megapixel quality. However the big difference comes when you want to digitally zoom into an area, either live or recorded, to get a registration number or a face.

HD or 2.1 megapixel used to be a standard for most CCTV systems, but things have moved on a lot. We would normally install a minimum of 5MP cameras, sometimes 8MP, but you also have the option now of 4K, which is 12MP. A lot depends on the distance you are trying to zoom into something. Any CCTV installer worth considering will be able to give you advice, but like I said we usually install 5MP camera with some great results.

One last thing to consider, the greater the megapixel camera the more hard drive space you will need. Times that by the number of cameras needed and this can sometimes be considerably more expensive for something you probably don't need. Hope this helps.
